Allegany County Clerk’s Office Mission Statement
The County Clerk is responsible for the receipting, indexing, storage and retrieval of documents, including legal records pertaining to ownership of real property and all court records, except criminal records, for Supreme Court and County Court. The County Clerk’s Office is also responsible for the collection of revenue for these services, which are provided to several levels of government.

COUNTY TAX SALE: Click HERE for information regarding the County tax sale. If you wish to search the County Clerk records for liens on a property, you may search in-person at the County Clerk’s office or online HERE. (Please note: not all County Clerk records are available on the online search service.) The County Clerk’s Office does NOT give legal advice.
DEED COPY SCAM: Deeds are public records and copies can be obtained at the County Clerk’s Office for a fee in the $1.30 to $5.00 range. It has been brought to our attention that SCAM letters are circulating asking for $80.00 to $100.00 to obtain copies – this will NEVER be the case! If you receive a letter and are unsure, please contact the County Clerk’s Office at (585) 268-9270.
FORMS OF PAYMENT: Fees collected by the County Clerk’s Office may be paid by Cash, Check or Money Order only. No credit/debit cards accepted at this time. All payments made payable to Allegany County Clerk.

New Yorkers who believe they are a victim of deed theft are encouraged to contact the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) by calling 1 (800) 771-7755, e-mailing deedtheft@ag.ny.gov, or filing a confidential complaint online HERE.
The Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP), a network of housing counselors and legal services providers throughout New York supported by OAG, offers free housing counseling and legal assistance statewide. Homeowners can contact HOPP online HERE or call 1 (855) 466-3456 to get help.
NOTARY PUBLIC: Beginning June 30, 2023, notary public applications and renewals are done exclusively online through the NYS Department of State website HERE. County Clerks no longer process notary public transactions. For more information or assistance, visit the Department of State website HERE.
PASSPORTS: Beginning August 28, 2023, appointments will be required for passport applications in our office. Walk-ins may still be accepted, but you are not guaranteed to be seen without an appointment. To book an appointment, visit alleganycountyclerk.setmore.com or call (585) 268-9270.
TO CUSTOMERS WHO RECORD DOCUMENTS IN OUR OFFICE: All documents presented for recording in our office must be accompanied with an adequately-sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope (“SASE”). This department will no longer provide envelopes or accept the expense incurred to return recorded documents to you; therefore it is imperative that you take action to ensure that your original, important documents will be returned to you.
