Public Safety in Allegany County is a collective effort between a number of different government agencies with the goal of enhancing and improving the overall well-being of citizens. Groups like the District Attorney’s office, Sheriff’s Department and programs likes the county STOP-DWI Program help improve the safety of all our residents.
District Attorney
The District Attorney is a State Constitutional Officer, elected by the county electorate to a four-year term. The DA and Assistant District Attorneys appear in all 29 town and 9 village courts as well as County, Supreme, and Appellate Courts and is responsible for the prosecution of all violations of the law that occur within the county’s borders.

Sheriff’s Office
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office is one of the most recognized agencies in our county government and are responsible for a number of different services including maintaining and securing the county jail and courthouse, maintaining public records, operation of the E-911 and CodeRED services, and more.

STOP-DWI

ALLEGANY COUNTY STOP-DWI PROGRAM
The Allegany County community stands united in its stance against the threat of drunk drivers on our highways. The Stop-DWI program is designed to identify local problem areas as it relates to alcohol related fatalities and injuries. In partner with local police agencies, the Coordinator is responsible for the planning of DWI-related seminars and training sessions as well as unannounced patrols to crack down on drunk driving.

Weights & Measures
The mission of the New York State Bureau of Weights and Measures is to promote equity in all commercial transactions based on weight or measure. The Allegany County Weights and Measures Director inspects scales, gas pumps and other devices at local businesses for accuracy to ensure an open and honest marketplace.
