Rural Arts Road Show

David A Howe Library 155 N Main S, Wellsville

This show, organized by the Arts Council of Wyoming County (ACWC), features art made specifically for the show by artists living in Allegany and Wyoming counties and is meant to bring awareness to the mental health challenges that are prevalent in rural communities. The show was first on display in May at the ACWC Gallery in Perry and has since been traveling around the region.

The Rural Arts Road Show is modeled after a project in Australia’s rural Tasmanian area, which, like Wyoming and Allegany Counties, has a high rate of social isolation, suicide, and depression. A mental health facilitator will be present during the opening reception – September 14, 6-7:30 p.m. – to facilitate discussions about mental illness/wellness that may be brought up by the art on display.

Opening Reception for Ashley Lyon: Super Real and Reuben Nakian: The Impassioned Gesture

Alfred ceramic art museum NY

Alfred University’s well-known, multi-media art school is unique in its expansive growth from the Binns ceramic art legacy. Alfred Ceramic Art Museum acknowledges this fact by celebrating all the visual arts within various aspects of its exhibition cycle, while concentrating its collection policy on ceramic art.

Two exhibitions open in the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum: Ashley Lyon: Super Real and Reuben Nakian: The Impassioned Gesture. Opening Reception September 21, 5-7pm

Super Real presents a collection of recent artworks, ranging from the colossal to intimate, by sculptor Ashley Lyon. Through scale, fragmentation, and touch, Lyon translates figures and objects into reflections of lived experience.

Reuben Nakian is best known for his large-scale bronze sculptures. However, Nakian left for posterity a large, highly significant body work in the ceramic medium. It is this less recognized, but unquestionably important work the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum is celebrating with this current exhibition Reuben Nakian: The Impassioned Gesture.

On view: September 21 – December 30, 2023
