RE: Allegany County to launch ‘Operation Green Light’ in support of local Veterans

In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Allegany County announces that County buildings will be illuminated green November 6 through the 12th as part of Operation Green Light, a nationwide initiative to support veterans and raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families. With support of the Allegany Senior Foundation and the Office for the Aging of Allegany County, green light bulbs will be available at the Office for the Aging at the Crossroads location, for Allegany County residents, while supplies last. The collaborative was developed by the NYS Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021 and was adopted this year by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO). Michael Hennessy, Veterans’ Service Agency Director, says of the initiative, “The Allegany County Veterans’ Service Agency is pleased that Allegany County leadership is promoting “Operation Green Light” in honoring the county veterans who have served in times of war and peace. Operation Green Light is a silent reminder of the sacrifice our veterans have made.”
In addition to lighting County buildings, residents and businesses are encouraged to join by changing one light bulb in the entryway of your house or business to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported. While this event is focused around the week of Veterans Day (November 6-12), participants are encouraged to continue shining the light year-round.
Residents can share their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight. “We’re incredibly proud to see so many counties in New York State and now around the nation joining Operation Green Light.
