Whereas, the Allegany County Agricultural Society was started in 1843, and the first Allegany County Fair was held October 8, 1844; and
Whereas, for 177 years the Allegany County Fair has promoted the rich agricultural heritage of Allegany County; and
Whereas, the Fair supports agricultural education for children, particularly for 4-H and FFA members; and
Whereas, the Allegany County Fair is an event that creates a strong sense of community through volunteerism and participation; and
Whereas, the Fair provides an opportunity for adults and children to exhibit their talents in fine arts, crafts, sewing, needlework, food preservation, baking, gardening, and raising and showing animals; and
Whereas, the Allegany County Fair offers the opportunity for community organizations and businesses to promote themselves and their services; and
Whereas , a full schedule of events and activities including horse pulls, livestock judging, musical performances, amusement rides, a rodeo, and a demolition derby provide entertainment for all ages; and
Whereas, each year the Fair attracts thousands of visitors from outside Allegany County, thereby providing a tourism destination and benefiting our local economy.
Now, therefore, I, Philip G. Stockin, Chairman of the Allegany County Board of Legislators, do hereby proclaim July 18-23, 2022, as ALLEGANY COUNTY FAIR WEEK in honor of the 177th Anniversary of the Allegany County Fair and encourage residents to visit the Allegany County Fair, to walk the grounds, and enjoy the many displays representing Allegany County. I would especially like to thank all of the volunteers, past and present, who have made this Fair a success for 177 years.
